WordPress maintanance - how to download or otherwise make mods?

WordPress maintanance - how to download or otherwise make mods?

Very basic question.
May be a repeat, since I seemed to delete first attempt while previewing. Apologies if so.

I need to know how to download a site to do some maintenance. I have access to the site WP dashboard. Do I need to install some software locally – and if so what – and will that allow me to download and test without making live changes to existing site? Will it give me access through the dashboard?

Thanks. Apologies for stupid question. Very embarrassing.

RE: WordPress maintanance - how to download or otherwise make mods?

What kind of maintenance are you planning?

One can test without making live changes to a site by creating unpublished or private articles that only an authenticated user/admin like yourself could see.

You can also test by duplicating your public server on a local development server on your computer. Search for LAMP (linux), WAMP (windows), or MAMP (mac) installers to create a development server. Then you'll need to copy/export your web files and your MySQL database from your public server to your local development server.

Thanks, spamjim. Much appreciated.

My delay in responding is not lack of urgency (quite the contrary) but, I’m in Australia, midnight +, and I’ve been getting some sleep.

Site contains some (apparently) JS code to display a gallery of thumbnails of display photos, with each thumbnail displaying enlargement when clicked on. Thumbnails contain null href link as here (partial):
<li class="current butchers"><a href="#" id="gallery_category" title="butchers">Butchers</a> </li>
<li class="gyms"><a href="#" id="gallery_category" title="gyms">Gyms</a> </li>
Etc.

I need to be able to replace each null href with an actual page address within the site that can be referenced as a destination URL by an AdWords ad. And then, of course, to add the “destination” page for each gallery: butchers, gyms, etc. Also, make some text/link mods on thumbnail-gallery page itself (phone / email) and, finally, upload some better quality photos as full-screen enlargements to be linked to from the thumbnails. I’m assuming I can do this with straight html.

I presume I need to take the WAMP installer route to do this? Or is there an easier route (for a WordPress idiot like me)?

No blog involved, just a simple site. Don’t know why WP was chosen in first place. Site owner doesn’t want to continue with original developer so I’m not going to get much help in that direction!

Thanks again!

First off, if you have not already, you should post in the WordPress forum. While Tek-tips is a great resource, there are many more qualified eyes in the WordPress forums.

Secondly, to know what to edit, you'll need to determine if the gallery is running from the CMS database or if it is flat coded. There are also a few galleries that one could employ. Here's just one...
