Recently I habve been struggling to backup any 3300's. I know the issue is specific to my laptop as I can do it on another machine no problems.

I am running Windows 7 with IE8. I have reinstalled the latest Java, added the webpage as a trusted site, saving to a new folder in the user directory, disabled McAfee Firewall and Virus Scan and cleared all cache.

I can take a backup using the external FTP option and running Filezilla on my laptop but this is no good for the older versions.

The logs in the MCD show "BR_Manager - DB Backup - completed successfully. Client will initiate FTP transfer." then there is the following entry "EntryBlock - Disable Block State Backup in progress with Mask 0x2" and then it just hangs.

If I FTP into the controller is there a log file that will tell me why it's failing?? I can't seem to see one.

Also , I am testing this on a vMCD so can't connect to the RTC shell to see whats going on either. Is there a way to connect to the RTC shell on vMCD??

Please help as this is doing my head in.

I have also turned off all pop up blockers and tried using the Avant Browser and still no joy.

Have you tried adding the site to the local intranet settings?

Windows firewall is off and adding the site to the local intranet doesn't work either.

Other than reinstalling windows I'm runing out of ideas. It has worked in the past so I guess something else on my laptop is causing the problem.

I just went thru this process myself and can say that it can work at least

My main issues were java and windows firewall

I also added the site to the trusted sites and allowed downloads

I'm using IE 9 - maybe try an upgrade?

The only other thing I have had to do is shut off the firewall on an AT&T firewall. Other then that its been as suggested above ( java and IE trust issue ) that have alwasy been the problem.

Since other laptops work, then it can't be a VMWare issue or even a MCD issue. Have you tried defaulting the IE8 security settings.?

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.

I am plugged into a switch with the VM server and thats it. No other firewalls involved. The machine I can get it to work on has excatly the same AV and Firewall settings.

I'm thinking that some other application I have installed has caused this to stop working. I have uninstalled all unnecessary programs and rebooted and its still the same.

I feel a fresh install of windows is on the horizon

On my windows laptop its to do with the FTP settings in Windows 7. If I download a new release of software and install it on the lappy ready to use my FTP works fine and I can download and save databases UNTIL I reboot then I can't save again.

I tried using Filezilla but that just reports and invalid file name and won't save either. So i just use a different machine for the final backup before shipping.

I don't have ftp enabled within windows and I have uninstalled Filezilla Server.

Keep the suggestions coming people. Reinstalling windows is going to be last rest.

Not according to the other machine that it works on. That doesn't have any Windows FTP installed either. I thought the ftp was initiated from the mcd and just transfered a file to the laptop. The same as if you export a form.

That does make sense. I will enable windoes ftp and give it a go tomorrow.

Ok so just to prove it's not FTP on my laptop I've just run Filezilla Server on another machine from my laptop I can go to the command prompt, type ftp 192.168.1.200 and it prompts me to enter a username and password. I can then type dir and list the files in the users home directory.

Surely that proves the ftp client on my laptop is working ok. Or does it???

Try to ftp to RTC address and go to /vmail/temp/db/archive and check if there is a file named ipera3k.dba If there is, you will be able to use this as a backup, rename it to a .tar file, this is where the backup is located before transfer

Now you have a backup in case you encounter any issues when rebooting (if its not already been done of course)

I haven't rebooted the server as it it works from one machine and I have had this problem on a couple of systems. I'll try and ftp to the controller and manually get the file tomorrow.

I have known of issues when performing manual software upgrades, all security software services needed to be disabled in order to complete, for example forticlient and trend, sounds like something could be running in the background

Like I said in another postI have the same problem but if I download another release and install it ready for use my FTP works until i reboot the laptop and then it fails again...thats as far as I have got (I too can get to filezilla on another machine and log in etc. but still MCD fails silently; the logs just stop at telling me that MCD is going to initiate the transfer)

So I have assumed it is an FTP service problem.

If I use the filezilla server it fails with a an "invalid user name" which is somewhat unhelpfull too...

From your first post you said you were running on a vMCD and were not able to access the RTC port.  In release 5.0 SP1 Mitel disabled the secure telnet port to the RTC.  There is now a posted Knowledge base article: 11-5173-00079

Correct. Just my laptop and the vMCD server in a switch.

Thanks for all the suggestions but had to bite the bullet and reinstall windows yesterday. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to secure telnet to the RTC while doing a backup to see if that gave any indication as to why it was failing. But thanks for the heads up on the KB article. Will check it out this morning.

I installed a fresh version of Win 7 Enterprise. Didn't do any updates or configuring of windows, just installed the drivers for my laptop. Connected to the vMCD and it worked no problem.

I then reinstalled the Dell recovery image that came with the machine which is Win 7 Pro but also includes McAfee. Ran windows update and installed MS office. It still works, and I'm using IE9.

Next step is to start installing some of my commonly used apps keep testing it.

@joebrown123 - Any luck finding the culprit? I now have same issue on my laptop. Still running XP. Did not change a thing, but backups fail to transfer now from several controllers I've always backed up. Noticed the Java icon no longer appears in task bar like used to when on backup form. Uninstalled/reinstalled JAVA. Thinking ot may be another program I've installed

I never did find out what the problem was. After I reinstalled windows I installed all the program's I commonly use and it's still working.

One thing I did do a while back was install version 3.2 IP Office voicemail pro to test if it worked on windows 7. I did uninstall it but after that it seemed to have totally screwed some of the program's I use. Outlook was a messs as it had changed all of the dcomm settings. This may have played apart in.

I didn't add http to the trusted sites only https. Be interested to see if it makes any difference.

Had the same dramas recently , Im thinking its possibly also related to a windows update

I now have IE9 and latest java but only have installed the 32 bit version of Java and only use the 32 bit IE to access the MCD, and i can import export and backup no problems

- I think a key tip off is if java doesnt appear in ie tools and addons .

took three days of hell going round and round , I even uninstalled IE9 and went back to IE8 and it still would work.

If I never did anything I'd never done before , I'd never do anything.....

I'm thinking Windows Updates as well, since that is the only thing I've done to my laptop in the last month.

Joebrown, yes you need to add BOTH http and https, just adding one does not work... once i added both it worked straight away.

same thing has happened to me once... unfortunately reinstalling WinXP was the only way to sort this out

Maybe we should all start using VMware Player or Vbox to build a virtual machine, at least we wouldn't lose everything on our laptops. This way you could use the virtual machine without having to worry about conflicting applications.

I have also had luck lately with Firefox and IE Tab.

Sarond has a good idea. Create a sandbox for this kind of problems. Seems like Windows, or java or .net or some other bloody thing gets updated and screws this up.

I have had the same problem downgraded my java to 6 and is working fine now

Also had this issue a long time ago, downgraded Java to 6 update 26 and set it to never update again as it worked with that

Symptoms

After the latest Microsoft Windows update on September 24, 2012, the System Administration Tool (or ESM) does not provide the option to backup, and improperly reports that the ESM Backup/Restore page requires JAVA.

Background
After the Microsoft Windows Automatic Update is performed, when you launch ESM > Maintenance and Diagnostics > Backup or Restore, both ESM Backup and Restore pages display the message, “This page requires Java...” and you are unable to perform a backup or restore. In most cases, this problem is caused by an incompatibility in JavaScript, however, this error can also mean that the Java Runtime environment is not installed

Root Cause Analysis
The latest Windows Update is not compatible with the JavaScript used in the MCD software. To overcome the latest change with the Windows Update, Mitel is taking a proactive approach and providing a modified JavaScript to address this issue.

PC Platforms Affected:
We are currently only aware of the problem on PCs running Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 9.

MCD Software Affected:
All MCD software versions from MCD 4.0 to the latest MCD 5.0 SP2 are potentially affected.


Workarounds
• The short term workaround is to use the Software Installer to perform backup or restore (via the Full Installation menu options).
• The current term workaround is to download the revised JavaScript and FTP it to your MCD platform. (See instructions below.)

• A long term solution will be made officially available in MCD 5.0 SP2 PR2 and MCD 6.0 or higher. These versions are scheduled for release in October and December 2012, respectively.


IMPORTANT NOTE: Before you perform the following workaround, ensure that you have the correct Java runtime environment installed



To Download and FTP the Revised JavaScript:
You can use your preferred FTP client, or if you are not familiar with FTP, you can use the instructions below to use the FTP client supplied in the Windows operating system.
1. Download the attached uwi_jretest.htm file and store it on your Windows PC (for example, in c:/patch).
2. To open the Windows command line, click Start > Run…
3. In the Run dialog, type cmd and then click OK. A new DOS window opens, displaying the current path of C:/ < >
4. Use the CD command to move to the folder/directory where you stored the uwi_jretest.htm file. For example, if you stored the file in C:/patch, type cd /patch.
5. Start the FTP session by typing FTP <IP address of the MCD>. Enter the user name and password when prompted.
6. Type cd /sysro/webs/web/uwi/backup_restore and press Enter.
7. Type bin and press Enter.
8. Type put uwi_jretest.htm and press Enter.
9. Type bye to exit the FTP session.
10. Close the DOS window.

The Java script change is immediate. You should be able to perform db backup immediately

Found this works for me on Windows7....a recent issue where backup page was not detecting java installed..

1) Remove the update from Windows 7 - KB2744842 installed on 22nd Sept. (This is quickest option to resolving this issue..)
