I am installing a new SQL 2008 R2 cluster and have a question about multiple instances and drives. I carved out several volumes on my SAN (TempDB-DATA, TempDB-LOG, DB1, LOGS, DTC, Quorum, etc...) which translate to mountpoints and now am ready to install another instance (doing a Lync install and Sharepoint later on).

So my question is, do I need to create another 6 or more volumes for the new instance? I was thinking I could just add another volume/mountpoint for another database (say DB2) and my log could reside on the existing LOG mountpoint in another sub-directory... but I don't know about the TempDB stuff or if I need to address anything on the DTC either. Please help.

Ok, I think after much looking, I know the answer to this. Since this is another instance and not just another database, I will be creating additional volumes (so in this situation, 4 additional volumes for each instance). A separate volume for DB, LOGS, TempDB, and TempDB Log.

If anyone has anything they would like to add, please chime in.

Just another note on what I ran into... also had to create additional small volumes to use for my mount points for the other data/log related volumes as once I used it for that instance, it would not let me use it for another instance install as it was used for the previous.

So far, so good. Will be using the cluster for Lync's backend (RTC, Monitoring, and Archiving)...and if not overburdened, then SharePoint's backend with another instance install.
