I have a Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX Webcam that works fine in XP & W7 on in a vb6 app using AVICap32.dll.

The new Microsoft Lifecam also works on the same old driver (but not in HD of course)

My problem is I also want to run my app in old computers running Windows 98 (ugh)

I have tried a number of general purpose drivers that claim to work in 98 without success. Usually they all say 'upgrade your OS' when I go to install them and wont let me try to install them to see if they work or not. Or else I just get a black picture.

Is it possible AVICAp32 is the problem in Win98?

Any suggestions would be appreciated? (Please don't say Upgrade your OS!)

If the webcam came out after the Win9x era it might well have no drivers for those ancient OSs.

You'd probably need something like the very old Logitech QuickCam VC (black ball with black triangle stand).  Even the similar-appearing white QuickCam Express is probably too new for 9x (Logitech's support site lists Win2K as the oldest OS).

So don't blame us, sounds like Mother Nature and Father Time are telling you what you need to do!

I see TigerDirect lists older refurb PCs well under $200 each, most with XP but some even with Win7 Home Premium.

This particular installation has dozens of old ten year old PCs running 98 perfectly well and it is a real pain having to upgrade them all (even if they would work under XP!)

You cant seem to buy a non Sata drive any more so I cant even just do it in bulk!
They all were purchased with a WIn2000 licence but that kept crashing with multiple monitors with the only reliable multi monitor PCI card at that time so I went back to using WIN98 to get them going in 2001.

Another case of the Sins of the Fathers revisiting unto the next generation!
