coax on a 550 meter distance

coax on a 550 meter distance

I have an IT client wanting us to run RG-6 from one building to another to feed 3 computers and 3 VoIP phones off a RG-6. Superior Essex tell me they can custom make the wire on RG-59 or RG-11 and have RG-6, 2500 feet spool.
My question is can we put a RG45 to Coax converter at each end and still have the network work well 550 meter down the road?

I had suggested we bring in high-speed down to the other building, but the IT client tells me VoIP phones over VPN don't work to well, I don't believe them on that!

Has anyone set up such a network?

RE: coax on a 550 meter distance

What area are you in? is there fiber on the poles? they may be able to rent dark fiber to interconnect the buildings.

VOIP over VPN can be spotty. there is no QOS over the internet. I run my office on verizon FIOS with a VPN to our corp office and have no troubles with 6 phones and heavy computer use over the VPN.

another thought instead of running COAX why not just run fiber to the other site?

They did get a price to run fiber but the client thought it a bit to steep. There maybe a slight chance of renting space on the black fiber, meeting the client Friday morning and will see what's available. The other building is on their property thus maybe the client's responsablity to bring service.

Check out Cisco 1400 series Wireless Bridges....

I would need line of site for this and we are in a cemetery and the trees are quite tall, we have mentioned it would be the least expensive but tree tops would have to be trimmed.

RE: coax on a 550 meter distance

In the cemetery environment, running fiber in an underground conduit might be your best bet - you already have staff with digging equipment... If they resist that, arrange a demonstration of IP phones across a VPN - an internet drop to the other location would definitely be cheaper!

I am in agreement, the client did think the install price was steep.

jkupski - that looks like a terrific product - I'll keep it in mind for future problems, definitely! Hope it will help Sam173...

It does look good, thanks

I've used them and they do work.
They're sensitive to spikes, use their protection.
