I have installed SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 on my computer. I am trying to start an SQL database for the first time. I have installed SQl 2008 R2 when I go to start>>all programs>>MIcrosoft SQL 2008 R2>> Configuraton tools >> SQL Server Installation 64 bit an installation box comes up and I click yes Now I don't know where to go from here. I have tried to load AdventureWorks 2008R2 SR1  from the microsoft website, but I get an error message " A fatal error occured during installation This installer is only compatible with SQL server 2008 R2 ( Which I thought I installed on my computer)No such instance was found.  Is there anyway to sucessfully install this database package?

You may only have installed the SQL 2008 R2 Installationcenter. This is your starting point for Installing or changing SQL Server 200R2 or new instances, this is not yet the server.

So start SQL Server Installation 64 bit, then choose "Installation" on the left side and the first item on the right side should be the one to do to install a new instance.

Bye, Olaf.

You are on to something. I clicked on the installation tab >> Than I clicked on the New installation or add features to an existing instalation >> I get an open folder dialog box when I try to pick a directory I get the same error message "Not a valid installation folder"

Well, you need to pick a folder location that would be valid to install there. Most probably not an already existing folder of SQL2005 or SQL2008, or keep it at the default.

SQL2008R2 does detect previous instaallations/instances, also of previous versions, and leaves them intact. You will get your new instance just by staying with the defaults.

Bye, Olaf.
