I installed some 9608 phones last year before they stopped selling them.  Luckily they had few problems.

The IPO is on R6.1.  What version of firmware should I upgrade to phones to?

Am I going to have move the whole thing to 8.0 to get a stable system?

Thanks.

R38 is the latest GA firmware.  Official support comes in the 8.0 Q2 release from what I heard.  I've had decent luck with R38 which IDs as 6.1380 in SSA.

There will be new firmware and it is in trial at the moment.
And to give you hope, it works very nice.
I did not have any 9608 getting frozen anymore.

Peter, am I correct to assume that the new firmware/Q2 maintenance release will bring support for the 9611 also?
tlpeter (Programmer)

It should be Q1 and yes i think they will support the 9611.

Will the 9608 sets do LLDP and or DHCP with the new firmware?
tlpeter (Programmer)

They already do.

I've recently had problems with 9608 screen
freezing.

Disabling LLDP on the switchports fixed the issue for me!!

No more reboots, no more crashes.

Denny, that's issue avoidance not fixing though, next release 8.0 and 8.1 should sort it out smile

Those handsets are not supported on any current IP Office release at the moment due to issue such as this, they  placed them on sales hold until they can make a firmware that works properly, when they do it will be a Release 8/8.1 build though, not R7 I would think smile

7.0 has the same files as 8.0 so yes 7.0 will support them too with the next release.

tlpeter,

How do you know this? A new 9608 firmware wouldnt 'just' work with 7.0 software just because the old one does?

tlpeter (Programmer)
14 Mar 12 3:11
I know because i do the trials and we have about 20 odd 9608 in our company running the new firmware.
I also have the 7.0 trial software on my laptop and it has the same files for the 96x1 phones.

@ tlpeter

Hi,

Does the 6.2 Software for 9608/9611G/9621G/9641G stop the freezing issue ?

Or there will be a new patch ?

Cheers.
tlpeter (Programmer)

For me it stopped the freezing.
Once in a while it is a little bit slow but it always dials the numbers.

@tlpeter

One last thing,

According to support site/96xx,

Avaya one-X® Deskphone H.323 6.2 Software for the 9608/9611G/9621G/9641G
The new 9600 Series IP Deskphones - the 9608, 9611G, 9621G and 9641G models - require Avaya one-X® Deskphone H.323 6.2 software.
Avaya one-X® Deskphone H.323 Release 6.2 is supported on the 9608, 9611G, 9621G and 9641G IP Deskphones only and when used with Avaya Aura® Communications Manager. It will not load or operate on any other models. It is also not supported at this time when these models are used with Avaya IP Office or Avaya Branch Gateway B5800. Support for Avaya IP Office and Avaya Branch Gateway B5800 is pending in the calendar second quarter of 2012.

But it is in the next maintenance release.
I think this will be at the end of this month.

So bottom line, don´t try 6.2 on 9608 with IP Office ?
tlpeter (Programmer)

I would wait until it is released.
It could be different from the IPO version.

We have a number of new 9608s that fail to load the tar file S9608_11HALBR6_1r38_V4r52.tar

I know they are not supported on IP Office but we thought we would get them going and upgrade later. But guess what cannot get these to even load there files.

Any ideas?

Oh yes the kicker is I have some earlier 9608s that do load the file.

cheers

What we found is the 6.1 files would not load onto the new 9608 handsets so down loaded 6.2 tar files and off she went.

I noticed that the upgraded phones (i only rebooted 2 phones) have a lower version!!!

The upgraded phones have 6.2013 and the other phones have 6.2.175.
I guess they are changing it to the CM firmware???

Q1 2012 maintenance release for IP Office 7.0 and iP Office 8.0 were just posted to the avaya support portal.  The Q1 2012 maintenance release for IP Office 7.0 includes re-introduction of the 9608/9621G/9641G. The Q1 2012  maintenance release for IP Office 8.0 includes re-introduction of the 9608/9621G/9641G plus introduction of the 9611G. Both maintenance releases include 6.2.0.13 software for these models.

Have a look at the Technical Bulletin(s) for a known issue with upgrading from a factory IP Deskphone running 6.0 software to this load.

For those of you running

S96x1_UKR_V13r33_V13r33
S9608_11HALBR6_2_0_13U_V452

Do you still have VPN settings listed under the CRAFT# menu?

I recently upgraded to 8.0(44) and I've lost the VPN menu altogether on the phones that were flashed with the above firmware.

Any ideas?
amriddle01 (Programmer)
2 Aug 12 11:53
Yes, Avaya removed the VPN part of the firmware, they couldn't make it work so they simply avoided the issue and removed the option smile

@amriddle01

Really? Is this documented anywhere? Is there a way to downgrade back to the older firmware?
tlpeter (Programmer)
2 Aug 12 12:45
Why? the VPN option did not work so why leave it in?
You need to use the remote worker option for this.

I use 9620's for customers that want VPN phones. Quick and easy.
jiggarz (MIS)
2 Aug 12 14:49
I was able to downgrade the affected phones back to the firmware that came with 8.0(18) and got the VPN option back.

We've actually been using the VPN option on the 9608s for a while now. Have had minor issues but nothing major.

In what way are the 9620s better?
tlpeter (Programmer)
2 Aug 12 15:09
Those phones actually support the vpn option.
They are just a bit different.
