It sounds like your system is using the default vga video driver instead of ones designed for your adapter.  I would search for your make model of video card, ubuntu, and drivers and see if anything pops up.

Normally, one configures the video in the xorg.conf file which if I recall is in the /etc/X11 directory.

DougP, really searched?

take a look at the following thread in the UBUNTU FORUM:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=620828

maybe it helps (helped me with version 8.04, don't have 10.04 to test), if it doesn't then post back...

http://helpdeskgeek.com/linux-tips/install-virtualbox-guest-additions-in-ubuntu/
I think I needed to install guest additions first.
I managed to get a CDrom called VBOXADDITIONS 3....
to show up on my desktop. But in the Terminal program I type in cd /media/cdrom and get no such file or directory
This is ubuntu version 10.04

the prompt in the terminal is doug@doug-desktop:~$
typing cd anything always returns no such file or directory
if I type ls    at the prompt
I get
Desktop Downloads music    Public Videos
Documents examples.desktop Pictures Templates

they are all blue in color except examples.desktop

you need to be root or have root permissions (SUDO)...

I'll DL Ubuntu and test it, but can only get to it on Fri around 1600hrs CET (about 10 am. EST)...

if there is a file how do I know which folder it's in? to run it in Terminal and use sudo
In "Windows". I know Evil word. it shows the folder, date and stuff.
I can also drag a file to the run command and get its full path too.
can I do that too in Gnome is it?

DougP,

these are the steps I had taken to install the GuestAdditions onto Ubuntu 10.10 as a Guest on VirtualBox...

with Ubuntu powered down:

1. insert the VBoxGuestAddition.iso in the Virtual CD Rom...

2. fire up Ubuntu.

3. once logged in, the CD icon should be visible on the Desktop,
   a. open the CD by clicking on it, now an explorer type window should pop up...
   b. Drag and Drop the file called: VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run or VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run (depending on if you installed the 64 or 32 bit version of Ubuntu) onto the Desktop. and close the explorer type window.
   c. now RIGHT CLICK the the file, then PROPERTIES, now a new window should pop up, there under the PERMISSIONS TAB, click the check box where it says EXECUTE: and Allow executing file as program, also set the Permissions to READ and WRITE, then click CLOSE to accept it...

4. now open a TERMINAL (aka SHELL), there type the following:

cd Desktop

then sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run (or VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run)...

it should now begin to install, you may have to reboot afterward for it to work, but that should be it!!!...

report back....
