does increasing the number of logical partitions have any impact on the system whilst live ?

I had never observed any negative impact increasing a jfs/jfs2 filesystem online.

LVM is quite clever and works good.

chfs -a size=+2G /filesystem

will increase the mounted filesystem by additional 2GB.
