Firebug & Chromebug - outputting all log messages to the same context

Firebug & Chromebug - outputting all log messages to the same context

(OP)

Both Firebug and Chromebug are great, and are essential tools when developing XUL apps.

One thing that's always irked me about Firebug with Chromebug, though, is that when calling any of the logging methods (e.g. "console.log()"), the messages are logged to the console in the context of the window that called the logging method.

This means that if you're debugging many windows and wanting to inspect output from each of them, you have to keep switching contexts.

Don't get me wrong - this is also one of its strong points, as you don't pollute the console unnecessarily. However, I'd like the choice of whether to do this or not.

After playing around with the Chromebug source for a while, attempting to use Firebug's "cd" command, and a whole load of other ideas, I finally settled on this:

CODE

function getTopConsole() {
    var w = window;
    while (w.opener != null) w = w.opener;
    return w.console;
}

The code can be called from any window / dialog / prefwindow, etc. like so using the format "getTopConsole().<insert console method here>", e.g.:

CODE

getTopConsole().log('Always goes to the browser.xul context');
getTopConsole().warn('Oh dear');
getTopConsole().info('Hello world!');

No matter where you call it from, the output will always end up in the console for browser.xul, removing the need for you to switch contexts to inspect things from different windows.
