In my Device Manager I have RAS Async Adapter marked with yellow exclamation sign.
When try to uninstall it receiving:
"Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer"
Please let me know how I can fix it.

Here's one discussion about the same item that I found:
http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/373432-outlook-ras-async-adapter-what.html

Some of that advice may help.

However, if you don't recognize it, and don't know of any software that might be using it, then you may want to at least disable it in device manager for now.  Then I'd advise running these apps as well:
CCleaner
Malwarebytes Antimalware
SuperAntispyware
Glary Utilities
Advanced System Care

You can get all those at www.download.com

Also, if you don't have a 3rd party software firewall, I'd suggest you get one.  And if you don't have a router, I'd suggest you get one of those as well - hardware.

It may not be anything of the sort, but it almost sounds suspicious to me, based on what folks were saying in the linked thread.

Any more thoughts on the issue?  More details?  Let us know what/if anything you try, and then the results.

Can you pick up any relevant driver or service for that device if you look in the Recovery Console via the Listsvc command and use the Disable command to stop any relevant thing loading at boot time?

@linney,

Followed Philip Woodring's instructions from A to Z ,but unfortunately didn't work for me.
Deleting RAS Async entries in the Registry had just created a bunch of problems and I was forced to do Recovery of partition "C" after all.
Only one thing was possible - to uninstall RAS Async driver as well the other one #2, but Windows after reboot didn't create the new ones and present problems ( different drivers in connection with RAS in DM were marked with yellow exclamation sign ) and Eset Firewall was excluded.

linney (TechnicalUser)
6 Aug 10 15:41
Sorry that you had to perform a recovery of your C:, I am more regretful that it, the recovery, didn't resolve your problem.

So what is left to do, either disable that hardware, or find suitable drivers for it?

I don't full understand your comment about Eset.

Problematic driver belongs to group of Network drivers in DM
and under properties of RAS Async Adapter is written
"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"
MS tutorials regarding this Code 31 are useless and it is impossible to troubleshoot and fix this driver.
Applying Philip Woodring's ,re. Eset Firewall, changes in Registry disabled Eset Firewall.
If I disable this driver nothing changes, if try to Update it, receiving a message that no better driver is available.
linney (TechnicalUser)
7 Aug 10 16:36
I think the message means that Windows, or Windows Update, has no better driver for you, which leaves you the option of checking the manufacturer of the piece of hardware or the OEM.

You would need to locate the VEN and DEV numbers to identify the manufacturer and the device.  These are mentioned in the Device Manager via Properties/ Details/ Hardware ID's.

This link will take it from there.

Actually  on my PC  I have  Driver Version 5.1.2535.0 from 01.07.01 (Microsoft) installed.
On DG site found RAS Async Adapter     Microsoft     06/21/2006     6.0.5365.8     n/a
but this one suitable for XP Pro is not in download base from
DG.
Other ones are for Win 98 or 98SE.

VIDEO
LAN
USB
IDE drivers
Now  which one of them I should try when updating RAS Async Adapter.
Also from the second link dloaded the driver, but I am completely confused which one to use for RAS update.
Forgot to mention I have dual-boot OS on my PC - Win 98SE and XP Pro,
When 98Se is in operation no any yellow exclamation sign appear in DM- this occur only when XP Pro is active.
Please direct me how to proceed and thanks for your efforts since now.
As I can notice no one of the members of this forum countered similar problem as mine - only you participate in this thread - i am very grateful to you linney .

Did you get any driver CD when you first purchased this machine?  Is the XP CD, if you have one, a Retail version or a Recovery CD from any OEM that might include XP drivers?

If there are no XP drivers on the page that Ben sent you to, you could make a restore point and try going with the Windows 7 driver and see what happens, it is not unusual for other operating systems drivers to work on another operating system.

Bronan,

I goofed once again...

driver: lan116.exe

DL Link: ftp://ftp.aopen.de/pub/driver/mb/sis/lan/

now that should be the correct one... but rechecking you may already have this driver from the other site, I would still DL the one from AOpen, just on the fact that driver is known to be clean (I am not familiar with DriverStock, on how safe the website is etc.)...

the link I gave earlier, somehow said it was a RealTek NIC, but in actual it is a SiS NIC, that is what one gets when posting half asleep and not paying attention...

have you checked the RAS services to see if they are not set to Disabled?

Is the boot order listing in the Bios correct, is there a listing for a Network location for a boot device?  The reason I ask is because of that earlier error (way back when) that started this long post off.

Have you ever not had the Device Manager error too?  That is why I asked if you had the original drivers CD that sometimes is supplied with a Motherboard.

Hi Ben,
I can not locate RAS Async Service .
Checked all Network services one by one , but can not find RAS dependencies in any of them.By the way , only two services of NET are disabled. other ones are Manual or Automatic.
If you can address me which services I should check, let me know , please.
Hi linney,
This problem with RAS is very old- I can not remember from when it lasts.
I have Motherboard CD delivered when I purchase PC, but after while I Updated this MB with new BIOS version.
Following tutorials from thread779-1353324: XP Ras Async Problem - code 31: XP Ras Async Problem - code 31, in my case this didn't work, but for author of thread this was solution.
I am able to delete Registry entry of RAS and after Update the driver, but Windows alwys dload the same version of driver-
5.1.2535.0 from 01.07.01 (Microsoft) installed

Sorry, for not being clear enough, as I am using a non english XP install, the names will be off...

make sure that all services that deal with Remote Access and Network are set to MANUAL or Automatic, note down the ones that are set to DISABLE (in order to shut them down later again)

e.g. Remote Access Service, Application Layer Gateway Service...

does or did your computer have a MODEM installed at any time, or is there a MODEM installed?

if so, can you remove the MODEM (if you do not need it) and restart?

so far, anything that I have read about RAS ASYNCRONOUS DRIVERS etc. lead me to believe that either a MODEM is installed or was installed (this could include Software installed for accessing Mobile Phones)......

Only three of services which in some way can be in connection with RAS are Disabled and will try later what you suggest.

"The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error:

Changed Computer Browser service from "Automatic" to "Manual" and after reboot this error no more appear.
But problem which remain is that from Computer Browser service under dependencies are SERVER and WORKSTATION and if Computer Browser is not started Server and Workstation will be out.
What you advice, please.
linney (TechnicalUser)
14 Aug 10 15:53
The Computer Browser Service "depends on" (relies on them running) the Server and WorkStation Services, and not the way you are interpreting it, it is the other way around.

One common reason for the Computer Browser Service to fail to start is "because it has no work to do" if the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is not enabled in the Network Adapter Properties.

Also make sure File and Printer sharing is ticked in Windows Firewall.

Try also start windows firewall, auto updates. security center services to fix this.

Sorry for my ignorance.
It is true File and Printer sharing was no ticked in the Network Adapter Properties.
Windows Firewall of my PC is disconnected probably because of Eset Smart Security- this one has his own firewall - so is not possible to apply what you suggest.
I check my Registry after running rarepair.exe tool and found that sub entries from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318} -from 00001 to 00008 were removed from Registry.
Seems that present problem overcoming my knowledge .

After the recovery how is the machine running?  If it is running smoothly then my advice is to stay with the current configuration despite that error in the Device Manager.

Contacted people from MS and they advice me to remove Modem to resolve RAS problem.
I am not Computer Guru , just common user who love "computing", but in this case I am feeling defeated.

You can post about an unsolved bug, etc without the expletives.  Those are not required in any question or answer.

Frankly, this site's limiting of folks using vulgarity and such has been one of the main reasons I've preferred to participate.  It is indeed professional, and you don't have to worry about being offended in the truly technical forums.

I can offer some technical suggestions on this one, but I doubt it'll be anything new (don't remember everything mentioned right off hand), and this is definitely one that I've never personally experienced.

One thing I might would consider that doesn't appear to be mentioned, and honestly it would NOT be my first guess or choice in such a matter, is to try removing one stick of RAM at a time from the system, and see if the error goes away.  I honestly think it's a long shot, but I've seen some really weird issues caused by bad RAM.

If you want to give that a shot, I'd suggest:
1. Turn off the computer
2. Unplug the computer
3. Hold the power button in for at least 5 seconds to ensure all power drained - just to be sure
4. Open the case
5. Pull out one piece of memory/RAM.  Actually, if you feel both/all memory sticks, and one feels hotter than the other, I'd go with removing that one first.  And then make sure that one of the sticks is in the "first" memory spot.
6. close back the computer case
7. plug in and power on the computer.
8. you might get a changed memory message before windows... just hit <enter> and keep going.
9. Once you're in Windows, see if you can resolve your issue.  If it's resolved, then I'd go shopping for more RAM.  If not resolved, then you'ved narrowed that one out.

Another possible thing to consider is system file corruption within Windows.  If this system isn't a painstakingly installed setup, then a repair install or clean install would be the best bet there.

Well, I'll hush.  If I haven't already, I'll end up repeating someone else's suggestions.  wink

Hopefully you'll find a solution.

Try whatever you can, and let us know your progress.

Well I didn't pick up on any profanity but I don't blame you either for being a bit upset, who wouldn't be?

I like kjv1611's idea of removing part of the hardware, and if that doesn't help, then I reckon I'd remove the whole (what was that word?) machine.
BadBigBen (MIS)
16 Aug 10 17:56
WHAT WAS THAT WORD) - some may consider it as profanity, others are so used to it that they do not pick it up as such... enough said...

Bronan, I am aware that you attempted to update the RAS ASYNC driver, but have you gone to the MODEM manufacturers website and attempted to UPDATE the driver from there?

does your PC have IEEE1394 (FireWire)? try to update that device as well... RAS has to do with Networking, under which FireWire, NICs, and Modems belong to...

that was also the idea behind you removing the MODEM earlier, to see if the problem went away, to pinpoint the source... as was with updating the drivers for the network card and modem...

softmodems have been known to cause problems, at least in my experience though it has been ages (10 yrs or so) ago...

On "the word" that was mentioned, I know I look at it like this, which I would assume to be in the consideration for the forum's usage of the terms, "professional", and "profanity."

I'd ask this question:  Would you use the term in an interview, or in the court of law?  Not saying we have to use legal words, but just getting the idea of what would be considered profanity.

Ultimately, the definition has to be left up to the site owners, of course.

-------------------

On with the technical piece..

BadBigBen's post brought something to my mind...

How is it, bronan, that you do connect to the Internet?  Is it via a broadband modem, or dial-up, or what?  I'm assuming broadband, but to make sure we steer clear of all assumptions, please tell the full path of your Internet connection, from the wall to your computer:

So, for instance, if you're using a cable modem and a router, it'd be wall - cable modem - router - computer (and over what connection - wired ethernet or wireless?)

Or if you do not have a router involved, are you going from the wall to your cable or dsl modem, and then connecting via USB or via Ethernet?

I don't honestly think that an external modem is the issue, but I suppose it could be.  And with that in mind, do you have any external modem you use just on a rare occasion, possibly for faxes or such?

But as BadBigBen said, for sure, remove ANY device possible if it's not necessary, that is involved in network/ineternet communications, and see if the problem goes away.  If you've got a dial-up modem installed, but aren't using it, why not just remove it anyway?

Post back and let us know how things go.

D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet , IP settings DHCP ,wired with router and
2/ By Dial Up through internal Modem Intel(R)536EP 56k.
I am using broadband connection, but as I have dual boot on my machine- XP Sp3 and Win 98SE, I keep Modem mostly for OS 98SE - and as a spare if something goes wrong with LAN
If remember well this RAS problem was present on XP Pro before installed broadband ,when only Dial-up connection installed.
Don't know if this is important-RAS Async Driver in my DM is version 5.1.2535.0 -but in C:\Windows\system32\drivers I have
asyncmac 5.1.2600.5512  ( 14 KB)
Once I try to uninstall Modem drivers and disable it, but nothing change on RAS

Well, when BadBigBen mentioned removing the modem, I am pretty sure he means to totally physically pull it out of the computer - not just uninstall in device manager or any other means.  So long as it's there, Windows will try to load files, try to access it at least to see what it is.  If you remove it altogether, you can better fix the problem.

As for accessing the web via Win98, you may just need to do more searching for better drivers for your Ethernet/LAN connection.  I know there's some super pack out there that was built by a 3rd party that gives lots better driver support to Win98 machines, and such.  BadBigBen probably has the link handy.  I could probably find it again, but don't recall it off hand.

KJV1611, I guess you meant this:

UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 2.1a (Freeware)
http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

Bronan, the versions listed are of course not the same, as they are two different drivers altogether... the RAS Async Driver is a software API, which connects to several different devices, and loads other supporting software in the background, when one of those cannot be loaded or accessed, it will balk and throw an error as the one you are seeing...

is it possible to receive more information to your system? what mainboard, RAM, CPU, etc... the more info the less guessing we have to do...

Bronan, the MS-6330 mainboard is close to 8 yrs old... I would be shopping for a replacement, as modern hardware is faster and replacement parts are easier to get...

in the meantime, update all drivers of the system...

I'll list the latest drivers:

Retro chipset VIA 4in1 drivers (scroll down, not the first link but the second)
http://www.viaarena.com/displaydrivers.aspx?PageID=1&OSID=1&CatID=1070

D-Link DFE-530TX Driver
ftp://ftp.dlink.de/dfe/dfe-530tx/driver_software/DFE-530tx_drv_revC1_309_ALL_en_020723.zip

I have no idea why we thought the system was from AOpen (one of your links pointed to it), but that complicated the issue more than was warranted...

the above links are the correct ones according to the report on the system, please update the ones I linked to, then report back again...

it would also help to know the MODEM manufacturer and type that is being used, in the DeviceManager right click the Modem then go to the TAB listed as DETAILS, there is a dropdown menu, I need the VEN&DEV numbers listed under HARDWARE ID...

Modem  is Intel(R)536EP Modem
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1040&SUBSYS_10008086&REV_00\3&61AAA01&0&48

Don't know if installation of new Driver For Fast Ethernet is ok- after reboot this is what I  read  from Details:
PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3106&SUBSYS_14031186&REV_86\3&61AAA01&0&60
After finishing the installation,  a new
'Local Area Connection' not appear, so I doubt that installation is O.K.
Followed tutorial for WindowsXP- not sure for results ,as this install process passed very quickly.

Installation of new VIA_ 4in1_443v driver passed O.K.
No any significant improvement re performances.
MB is old would like to change it but problem are RAM ,because nowadays is impossible to found SDRAM memories for slot A.

Ethernet - D-Link DFE-520TX PCI & DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (rev.C)
Driver linked is the correct one... Double checked...

unpack driver to a folder, then manually install driver for the Ethernet card...

Meanwhile succeed to install D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (rev.C).
In Device Manager yellow sign for RAS Async Adapter still stays on it's place,
Will Update Modem Driver also and report for any changes .
Thanks very much for your kind efforts to help me.

That pretty much all that can be done at this stage... sry to hear that updating the drivers did not fix the problem...

that is why you should upgrade to at least DDR-2 supporting mainboards... even a Celeron Socket 775 will run circles around the system you have now...

I hope I can change MB and with this pass to DDR-2 RAM, but guess that even Processor should be changed and also Graphic card with ones  supported from new MB.
I'll appreciate your advice what combination will be the best regarding hardware changes - having in mind other components what I have now on my Desktop installed.
Regarding actual RAS problem I haven't Error messages in my Event Viewer.
For your information I don't need very strong and fast machine because I am not playing games - I am just home user with some little Internet surfing , reading news and similar  - not to much heavy duty things.Any how RAM of 512 MB should be enough , but seem there is some other System problem which I am unable to discover.
Once again I am very thankful to you for all four help since now.

You are listing so much hardware there I wonder if it is false economics in not considering a new machine as an option?

Bronan, as I don't know where in the world you are living, I can only give general advice...

if you update the system tak a look at bundles (CPU & Mainboard combos), e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.468966

The above system comes complete, mainboard, Ram, CPU, and integrated VGA, all you would have to do, is to assemble it yourself...

Thanks Gentleman I will consider option to buy new PC near specification from http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.468966.
Very economic and reasonable prices indeed.
This Athlon processor is 64 or 86 (32)
Here , where I am leaving , component prices are much higher
then this quoted in a/m site , but in any case I have to do something to overcome actual problems.

Bronan, the Athlon II X2 is a 64bit processor, which will run x86 code just fine... meaning you can install a 32bit OS (XP for instance) with no problem, but I would go Windows 7 64bit, which can also run 32bit software...

If you do go 64 bit Win7, I'd suggest getting at least 4GB of Ram, not 2GB as is listed in the product listing.  If you want to install 2GB of RAM only, then I would definitely stick to 32 bit.

Finally , famous RAS Async Adapter problem sorted.
What I have done ?
Removed Registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}/ 0001 ( Before Exported it ), reboot and after deleted Ras Async Adapter with yellow sign.
In Service change settings for Remote Access Auto Connection Manager from "Manual" to "Automatic" , then Return entry 0001 for RAS Async Adapter in the Registry- reboot and my Device Manger appear clean now with RAS Async Adapter 2# fully operating, as hidden device.
Hope this will help other people who have problem as it was mine.
