I have just been asked a very interesting question....... Can the Mitel 3300 link in with Skype in any way? We have your assistant etc and would like to avoid shelling out for mics and webcams for everyone, so wondered if we could use the 5220/5224's instead??

Any help would be great!!

nope cause Skype uses propriatary protocols and you'll still need a headset and mics etc.
there are other SIP softphones though that you could try. X-lite comes to mind - this still wouldn't eliminate the need for headsets and stuff.

(I've not tried any of these things)

You get boxes which interface Skype with existing phone systems (IP or not), via analog or even ISDN30/PRI, see:

Skype are also trialling a system that lets you integrate your IP PBX, via SIP, with Skype, so you can make/receive calls, to/from Skype users/breakout, see:

Accordingly, it ought to be possible (if Skype accept your organisation onto the beta program, and you buy SIP trunk licenses for your Mitel), to connect your Mitel, via SIP trunks, to Skype, and then, make/receive calls via your 5220/5224s

You just said the poison word, "Beta"

Unfortunately, with high profile production systems in a "must work" environment it's difficult to impossible to get management's buy-in on anything that's other than an officially released/supported platform and even then many people won't touch release N.0 for reasons which should seem obvious.

We're using it here in our office.  Not much but it is installed.  Using a product call Vosky.   Works.  Some issues with call quality and you;ll never get a fax out the lines.   Interesting, you can call directly from the PBX to a skype user.    It requires a PC and an aditional box to interface to the PBX via analog lines.  In bound we ring to our speech enabled 6510 so via skype you call in, hit the AA and can get to any desk phone.

That sounds preety cool. Do you know how much you paid for it? Have you setup anything to do with video?

I really don't know how much we paid for it.   The reason we got it is because we are actually a dealer for the product so we probably got it heavily discounted anyway.  I don't think it's something we've pushed since I don't think the margins are that great for a dealer.  Our reps focus on other areas.

You can do is with skype for asterisk module. I got trial key which unlocked one channel and it actually worked very nice. Skype->Asterisk->SIP->Mitel. Never got any further then just experimenting since there was no application for it.

I've got a Magic Jack plugged into my can.  Just set it up as an LS/Class and your off an running.  The only thing i noticed is that the MJ seems latent on touch tones so you have to hold the key down a little longer.

I've also got a Cisco ATA-186 hooked up to a LS trunk as well.  This is a SIP solution and i get dial tone from Asterisk server, this also works quit well.

With the skype for asterisk module, is video available as well as voice??

Didn't try video. The only thing is that MITEL will strip m=video SDP header. At least when I tried it with SW8.0 version. So I would not bet on it.

Mitel is currently testing a direct SIP integration with Skype. In the meantime they resell VoSky gateways and those have been n internally tested and are approved for use. Installation notes are available for resellers on Mitel Online.
