I've heard that without reinstalling the OS there is no way to update the full version (not the beta). Is this true?
thank you.

It is not true. You will need to copy the media to the PC, then edit the CVERSION.INI file found in the sources folder. Set the minimum version to the version number you are running. I had to do that to upgrade from Beta to RC. And then again to upgrade from RC to RTM. I hope you find this post helpful.

What are you trying to update the full version with? By full version do you mean the recently released to manufacturers version? |

Hi guys,
Please help me get this straight: there are already 3 versions of 7. demo which expires 2010 sometimes, RC version which expires soon, and the RTM.
I have the demo version. What do I have to do or buy to make it to the final?
Thanks much to everyone.

>demo which expires 2010
What are you talking about? I'm not aware of any MS-sanctioned demo version. If you are referring to the (resettable) trial period that is appicable to all full and proper version of Windows 7, it just means that they haven't been activated with the correct product code. There is therefore no upgrade to it necessary - apart from paying for a genuine product key ...
As far as Microsoft are concerned none of the betas, nor the RC (which could be thought of as a 'demo' version, I suppose, and does terminate in June 2010) are considered formal releases and thus there is no supported upgrade path from them.
And RTM is the final version. If you have the RTM again there is no need to upgrade. |

Try this at a Command Prompt to confirm what version you are running. Type the command VER As far as I know Release Candidate expires in June 2010 too. "Remember expiration dates: Please plan ahead for when the RC expires. You'll get two weeks' notice, and then beginning on March 1, 2010, your PC will start shutting down every two hours. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. To avoid interruption, you'll need to rebuild your test PC to replace the OS with a valid version of Windows, and reinstall all your programs and data before the software expires". Get Windows 7: Windows 7 RC http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/download.aspxI have not heard of, or are familiar with a "Demo" model, but if it has a similar expiry date to the Release Candidate then, I guess, you will need to purchase the RTM DVD? See what version (build number) your operating system is. "markdmac" is a supporter of upgrading the operating system, and if I understand him correctly NOT with an Upgrade copy of the RTM (as an Upgrade Versions may not be available yet)? Being slightly conservative in this matter I favor a clean install or an upgrade over Vista. See what Windows Easy Transfer can do for you. How to Upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7 http://www.nirmaltv.com/2009/08/06/how-to-upgrade-windows-xp-to-windows-7/ |

For the record linney, I too prefer to do a clean installation whenever possible, however the amount of configuration/installations necessary on my main PC make that a 3 day project which is just unacceptable. The question from the OP was of course regarding upgrade as well. I hope you find this post helpful.

And here's me spending a day and a half getting Windows 7 in clean with all applications and updates installed. Even going over Vista takes a couple of hours what with Windows Updates and the like.
Too bad that Microsoft put Windows Easy Transfer Companion in the too hard basket. One day we will have such an application that can handle transferring installed programs, at least I hope so? |
|
I'm with you on that. I saw the Easy Transfer Companion demoed at the MS Campus and was really excited but I felt the same way about WinFS and we can see where that went. I hope you find this post helpful.

Hi fellows again,
The version is "Evaluation Build 7100" and yes it was activated but I am not sure if this is valid until 2010.
thanks |

7100 is the same build. I believe, as the Release Candidate version. RTM build number is [Version 6.1.7600].
I would imagine that the Sunset clause applies to your version, but I bet that well ahead of that time you will be using the RTM version anyway? |
|
7100 is indeed the Release Candidate and thus will terminate in June 2010. And no, there isn't a supported way of upgrading from it to the RTM |
