NEW SSG20 WAN ACCESS PROBLEMS

NEW SSG20 WAN ACCESS PROBLEMS

(OP)
I am new to Juniper Networks stuff. Just got an SSG20 for my client and am having trouble getting the Admin Access to work properly. Most of the stuff is at default. I have configured IF0/0 as the WAN port for now. Since I am currently using a 1720 access router all the other routers connect to this thru a switch. The public IPs assigned can all be accessed from the cloud and on the "LAN" side of the 1720, including the SSG20, but when I try to connect, PING, or whatever to the IP assigned to the SSG20 from the cloud - NOTHING -!

I have been using the webui, haven't tried  CLI yet. I have read thru some of the documentation, and seem to be going in circles right now. I have been using IF0/3 for LAN access, no problem there. I was hoping to get it to work so I could configure remotely, since I won't have prem access on the weekend, and it is rack mounted.

Any help, pointers, or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This forum seems to be dead!

But I think I found part of the problem, no Gateway IP. I did not realize you need a Gateway IP for inward traffic, especially admin functions! Any input or comments from somebody...

RE: NEW SSG20 WAN ACCESS PROBLEMS

Yeah, I rarely see any action on this forum.

The gateway IP (default route?) makes sense, you need a return path to get out to the WAN in order to pass packets from the WAN interface.

Thanks for the response!

That makes sense even though it is "inward" it still needs a way out of the gate for the return side! Sort of like a 2-wire voice path... I realize now that that function is not inherent in the process and has to be spelled out in high end devices like the Junipers and Fortigates.

RE: NEW SSG20 WAN ACCESS PROBLEMS

Exactly right...your inbound packets will reach the device but it won't know where to send them back out through.
