Linksys WRT54GS VPN issues solved

Linksys WRT54GS VPN issues solved

(OP)
I have always liked Linksys routers except for this VPN problem.

I have WRT54GS version 2.  I am a network administrator and could NOT after hours of research on the web get the basic windows VPN client to work on this device through a static IP DSL modem.

I finally gave up monkeying with the router and the DSL modem, and solved the problem by updating the WRT54GS's firmware to a linux platform (not made by Linksys).  I am a Windows guy so this made me nervous but I did it anyway.   Google this:   dd-wrt    and you will find it.   Enter  your model number in the Supported Hardware tab.  I downloaded the "Vintage : standard" version.

Before upgrading the firmware I would do the following:

1.  Copy down all your configuration settings.

2.  Reset the router to defaults by poking in the little button on the back of the router for about 10 seconds. (note the reset pw is admin and leave the user name blank).

3.  Then get back on the admin page and install this firmware.

4.  The new admin address is 192.168.1.1  user is root and pw is admin

Did I mention the VPN works great now?  Lot's of features, super fast connection negotiations.  Highly recommended.

I was told you can always reload the old firmware if you don't like it ... but you will.
