Newb - can do similar with WP?

Newb - can do similar with WP?

(OP)
My client wants to have features like on this page on his site - the obits and guestbook top section

http://www.legacy.com/clarionledger/Obituaries.asp

And then the guestbook features like this
http://www.legacy.com/clarionledger/GB/GuestbookView.aspx?PersonId=122292737

with the free listings allowing a photo gallery of up to say 15 pics, then the permanent option with up to 40 or so.

Can something like this be accomplished using WP? I'm just getting acquainted with WP, and am not sure of plugins/widgets commonly available to produce features like these.

Thanks for any input,
Donna

RE: Newb - can do similar with WP?

Almost anything can be accomplished with WP - especially if you write your own plugins (which isn't that hard if you know PHP).

So 'yes' - it could be accomplished. As to whether or not there re existing plugins to do this, I'm not sure. You could hunt around here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ or do a search such as this to find many:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&q=wordpress+obituary+OR+%22guest+book%22+OR+guestbook+plugin&btnG=Search&meta=

Hope this helps,
Dan

RE: Newb - can do similar with WP?

the following may create some starter impetus for you:

1. think of each obituary as a page/post.
2. consider using flutter to customise the post/page form for your users.
3. each person allowed to post an obituary is a user.
4. consider using an [link http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-e-commerce/
e-commerce plugin[/link] to sell your obit posting rights.
5. consider using something like nexgen gallery to manage the photo display.
6. consider the guestbook as the 'comments' on a post/page.
7. the display of a post/page and its comments is entirely up to you.  this is called a theme.
8. consider the name of each deceased as a category.  that way you can make sure that they are automatically indexed and available via a select box.
9. you will probably have to write your own plugin to limit the number of images available for upload and also to make sure that images uploaded for one post/page are not available to other posts/pages/users.  this is not as easy as it sounds. you might want to search the plugins as per BRPS' advice to see whether any are pre-built for this task.
10. you should also use an admin side plugin to limit what your users can do with their posting rights.  i.e. you should customise the dashboard a bit.  just make it consistent with the user story/experience.

hope that helps. as per my previous post on this subject, i consider WP pretty much a perfect tool for your task.

RE: Newb - can do similar with WP?

I'm not as experienced as these guys but I went through the same decision making process. I ended up going with Wordpress and haven't looked back since. I have a blog but it can be used as a CMS easily enough.
