I am getting an occasional 39D9 error on 9840C drive. My latest microcode in R1.35.505.

That means...

"39D9: The number of simultaneous corrected tracks exceeds the allowed threshold"

So either  
1. You have one or more worn out cartridges  
2. The 9840c needs cleaned
3. The 9840c has a worn head (least likely).

If the cartridges that fail work OK on another 9840c then #2 is the most likely.
