Can anyone please point out the settings that need to be carried to transfer data from one laptop to another using crossover cable. One laptop uses Win XP & the other uses Win Vista Home premium.

IP addresses need to be from the same range. Either assigned manually on the same subnet, or both systems setup for DHCP, in which case they both will get addresses from 169.254.x.x range.
I have "Simple File Sharing" disabled (unchecked), so not sure how you would work with it, I use "net use" command.
May have to disable firewall if present or configure it to allow sharing.
