I am attempting to compile Perl-5.8.8 on FreeBSD 7.0 without any luck.

Configuration seems to go fine, but errors are received when using make, or gmake.

The make error is make:  don't know how to make <command line>.

The gmake error is make: *** No rule to make '<command line>' needed by 'miniperlmain.o'

When Googling, I did find a reference to this error occurring when the system date/time are incorrectly set.  The date and time on the system are correct.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Install Perl using the FreeBSD Ports Collection.  A lot easier.
