Hello - I was in a document working along when all of a sudden both of my area type tools stopped working.  When I click on the art board, I get the message "You must click on a non-compound, non-masking path to create text inside a path."  All of the other type tools work properly.  What did I do and how can I fix this?  BTW, I pulled up a blank document and the same thing happened.  I rebooted my laptop too.

...area type tool requires a click and drag approach, not just a click...

...you need to make a bounding area for the type to sit within, this is achieved by click and drag...

...it is different to how the standard text tool works...

Thanks Andrew.  I'm trying to do just that.  Not only can I not click and drag to create a box, but illustrator won't let me put text into an existing object such as a circle or rectangle.

...delete the preferences file, see if that helps:

Thanks again Andrew.  Good to know where the preferences file is.  I found out my problem, I didn't realize I had to click on the PATH of the circle that I was trying to put my text into.  If you click anywhere else, like in the middle, you get the nastygram.
