ntp deamon dies

ntp deamon dies

(OP)
I have several servers with the same problem. When I try to start ntp deamon it immediately stops.

I used this procedure on many servers and it always worked, but now for some reason it fails:

I edit line in /etc/ntp.conf and put

server <ntpserver>

then command:

#ntpdate <ntpserver>
9 Jan 13:23:58 ntpdate[1110114]: step time server <ntpserver> offset 0.693589

and finally

#smith xntpd
(I start ntp deamon and smit message is PID number and no error message)

But deamon immediately dies.

Here is errpt message:

RE: ntp deamon dies

(OP)
I tried to run xntpd in debug mode, but only difference is that I still get same message in error log, but there is no message anymore in errpt.

Jan 10 10:27:58 pd6 daemon:notice xntpd[1089756]: 3.4y
Jan 10 10:27:58 pd6 daemon:err|error xntpd[1089756]: tickadj or tick unknown, exiting

Thanks for help.
If you have some more suggestions they will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Zoran
