Where in the world do Tek-Tips members come from?

Hello

I am interested in finding a less expensive way of taking patient information by residence code or postal code and mapping them.

Microsoft has MapPoint 2006 and the system requirements include "GPS functionality requires a GPS device that supports NMEA 2.0 or later"

What does this mean?  Is there a way to have a hand held GPS to attach to your computer ot access the postal code files and then use the software with your data?

Thanks.

How about using maps.google.com?

The question should be Is it worth trying to do? not Can it be done?

Hi

But how do I get the postal codes in the google map to geocode?

Shelby - I believe that the availability of geocodes depends very much on where you are. For example, they are not freely available in the UK.

Which nation are you looking to geocode?

Hi

Ontario, Canada is the area I'd like to geocode.  I know that this is possible with MapInfo but you have to buy the postal and CSD codes and that is where the expense is (roughly $22,000 for software and codes).

Indeed. We have a similar issue in the UK where the co-ordinate data is not in the public domain.

It means that it's really difficult to get the data without paying out the wonga I'm afraid.

(I've been working on a really similar project, and in the end I had to just grit my teeth and pay the money).
