Printer Sharing -- WinXP and Win2000

(OP)
Dear friends:

My wife's Win2000 computer is physically connected to our Okipage 14e printer. We also have Home Networking through Comcast Cable. I would like to connect my WinXP computer to the same printer using Printer Sharing. Could someone please guide me through this? I have read the Microsoft article on the subject but am quite confused. I don't need file sharing, just printer sharing. What's the easiest way to do this. My computer is called BEN, my wife's is called ANNA and the workgroup name for both is WORKGROUP.

Can you help, please. Would very much appreciate it.

Thank you.

Benjamin

Ok, on ANNA you have the printer added, the go to properties of the printer, and go to the sharing tab, there you should see a link to enable file and print sharing (or something to that effect) This should start a wizard that will as if you want to enable file sharing or print sharing or both, if you want just select print sharing.  Finish the wizard and now it should allow you to share the printer, you should see a share this printer check box.  Verify that it is checked and Enter a share name (only if you don't like the default one).  Click ok to the properties window and now you have the printer shared.  I believe the default permissions are full control for everyone.  Now go to BEN and go start >> run and in the run command box type \\ANNA this should open a window that shows the printer icon with the share name of the printer you shared.  Right click on the printer and choose connect.  It should connect to the printer.  Now open you printers and faxes window on BEN and you should see the printer you just connected to.  Now try to print a test page to verify that it works.  Now for Ben to print to the printer on ANNA, ANNA needs to be on and not hibernating.  IF ANNA is off or hibernating BEN will not be able to print to the printer.

Dear w33mhz:

Thanks so much for your help. Appreciate it.

I typed \\ANNA in Start, Run but I was asked for a username and password. What username and password, please?

Please see screenshot:

Thank you.

you may need to enter the username and password of an account on ANNA.  I don't know what you have a password for the administrator account on ANNA.  Try puting in ANNA\Administrator for the username and no password (unless you know the administrator password) for the password.

Dear w33mhz:

Thanks again for your valiant efforts. Unfortunately, typing in Administrator for username with or without a password (my Adm password) doesn't do anything. The dialogue box just comes back asking me again for the username.

Really stuck.

Thanks again.

RE: Printer Sharing -- WinXP and Win2000

Does your ANNA machine auto login when it boots up or do you have to log in?  Now also remember to use the adm password for the ANNA machine not your own (well unless they are the same on both machines).  If your machine does auto logon then just use the username it logs in with (if you click on the start button it will show it at the top of the start menu) Use that name with a blank password.  If it doesn't auto logon and you have to logon manually by putting a password in, then use that username and password.  Now remember this is all regaurding you are using the accounts on ANNA not BEN.  You are using BEN but need to authenticate with the computer ANNA using an account that is setup on ANNA.

Dear w33mhz:

All my thanks! I went into Anna's computer and reset the password for her computer. Now this time I had no problem accessing the \\Anna printer and, bingo, there it was Okipage14e. I tested it and the page printed perfectly.

Problem Solved thanks to your great expertise!
