We have the SPS server that’s running NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 as an OS---(Yeah, okay, don't laugh)

I need to install JAVA RUNTIME ENVIROMENT on it but it will not install.

I keep getting this error msg:

“ERROR 1732. THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE. A .DLL REQUIRED FOR THIS INSTALL TO COMPLETE COULD NOT BE RUN. CONTACT YOUR SUPPORT PERSONNELL OR PACKAGE VENDOR.”

So, I went to the MS website, downloaded and re-installed the Windows installer and I got the same issue.

I also went into  the system32 directory and checked to see if the READ-ONLY attribute for mfc42.dll, mfc42u.dll and msvcrt.dll files were unchecked, like they’re suppose to be and they were. I also checked to see if Microsoft's IIS and McAffee services were running, but they were NOT, so there was no reason to try to stop them. I retried the install again and it STILL gave me the same error msg. I also re-installed the platform SDK Redistributable: PSAPI for Windows NT and still got the same error msg.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any if so, any fix would be greatly appreciated, in the meantime, I'll continue to beat my head up agaist the wall.

Is it possible the version of the JRE you are trying to install is not compatible with NT 4.0?  If you go to www.sun.com/java, you should be able to find older versions of the JRE that are supported under NT
