That thread that you are referring to is nearly 4 years old.  Since then Filemaker version 7 came out and introduced user accounts which are now native to Filemaker in in all versions since 7.0

I recommend against developing your own security for a few different reasons.  Primarily because it will very likely be much weaker than using native FM accounts.

Take a look at the help file in FM.  It should give you the basics.
