I have a large size movie and I would like to reduce the size to

I mean I just want to have a small piece of the movie

This movie is in avi format

I Tried reducing the film size with flash.
I imported the long version into flash library.
soresen park asks if you want to edit the film
I said yes.
I reduced it.
Then I eported this short version into another file.
But the exported version is as long as the long version

I tried virtual dub.
It seems easy but did not work

I haven't used Virtual Dub in a while but I think you just have to select the beginning and end points you want then export your selection to a new file. When you say it didn't work, what happened? Did it give you an error message or did it chug away for a while and end up just creating a copy of your file?

All I want is to have a small clip of the old film.

I forgot to have a look last night but will try to do it tonight - I only have Virtual Dub installed at home, not at work.

Video on computers is a complicated field though. When you 'save' video you have a huge range of options, such as:

- What "frame size" to use, i.e. 640 x 480 or 320 x 240;
- What level of "compression" to use - the more you compress it the smaller the file but the worse the quality;
- What "container" to use, i.e AVI, MPEG, MOV etc.;
- What "codec" to use, i.e. what method of compression.

It's a confusing business. I am guessing that your original file is highly compressed but when you saved it you chose less compression, which could explain why the file ended up bigger.

Are you trying to make the file smaller (i.e. have the same running length but take up less disk space) or are you trying to make the movie itself shorter (i.e. cut bits out)?

I think i should go to a site that has tutorials on virtual dub.
The only thing I am able to do with virtual dub is open file.
I think I should open a new file and paste the small version that I want to paste.

Hello, I'm at home now and I've just had a look at Virtual Dub. Here's what you need to do:

1. Select your start and end points;
2. Go to the 'Video' menu and select 'Compression';
3. Choose a compression type - DivX or 3ivx are good if you have them installed;
4. Go to the 'File' menu and choose 'Save as AVI'.

It's steps 2 & 3 that are important. I saved a very short clip without compression and it took up 386MB; I saved it again with 3ivx compression and it took up 4.54MB. That's 85 times smaller!

If you don't have the 3ivx Codec installed go to http://www.3ivx.com/ and install their free compression toolkit. It should then be available in Virtual Dub.
