hi

first time here- seems like a good place to find help- i like the name-and seems like lots of info to be found-so id say its some great folks here- thanks in advance-

i normally stalk Abit forums all my mobos have been abit- ai7 ic7g and now a kn8- well im building my kn8 now- last week built a kn8 system for my bud- anyway this prob came up- i have never had befor-

i wonder if its having an older monitor hooked up to dvi out- or the coverter or the dvi connection on the new vid card could be bad- im asking both to maybe better set up my buds system- and at the same time wonder if i will run into like probs with my new set up-

i will post my buds system specs- and then my specs- mine is a multi sig 2systems- the kn8 is the 1 i have questions about- well both kn8 systems-

any way i hooked up my buds system- everything was great- i installed the drivers for the gto and ccc- no matter if from disc or most new drivers from amd ati site etc. anyway-

installed the drivers- opened ccc to set my wanted defaults- click on [3d] standard settings- who know where the car is running down the road on the little screen etc. or click on [video] standard settings-

the monitor would start turning on off on off over and over- it would make that funny crt start sound or clicking - then id restart the computer its fine- if back to to same place in ccc- or start some hard video stuff-say a game- it would start on off on off over and over-

so i figured my connection was not tight-checked its all good- so i disconnected dvi out- hook up the i guess analog monitor to analog out on the vid card-it all works perfect- all tests games even prey demo 3x back to back no probs- well after i enabled vsync i think it is- prey in game settings-

i do not have a digital monitor say lcd- the monitor i used to build his system is a dell trinitron ultrascan p780 17" may2001-

i always hook up my monitors dvi~crt- my 19" viewsonic p95f+ works perfect with my 9800pro- i never hooked up this dell to my p4 sig system- as soon as my kn8 is done- the p95f will carry over to my kn8- my system will have a 7800gt oc- these are more new vid cards- im not sure what if anything as far as signal is different from my older 9800pro-

so i wonder if i will have like probs with my new system- and or will i have probs when this dell p780 carries over to my p4 rig and 9800pro??

sorry so long-just trying to give as much info as i can- both my self and my bud will upgrade to lcd monitors in this next year- i hope his dvi out is not broken- man my stuff and room is so tight- and this view sonic is a monster- i got his system working-i did not want to rip my rig apart have to move stuff all over-to test my monitor or converter on his system-

well sorry- this dell p780 was give to me a few weeks ago- it seems to work fine- other than said above probs- buds sig first [his monitor is a different flat screen dell] i did not try to hook it up dvi coverter etc.- then my sigs->

my sigs-just waiting for my vid card 7800gt to get here- i robbed my p4 of its memory and will share the speakers between the 2 systems until i can buy more- im disabled with limited income- but i think with the right connections- i can sound out 1 of my systems to my normal stereo system aux.in ->

memory to 2 gigs each 2x1gig sticks fast cl.2 pc3500- better video cards and lcd monitors in this next year- oh yes another set of speakers-

id like 1 game system set up with nvidia vid card the other a ati card- i will worry about that stuff later-

sorry i see no way to edit my posts- id add this info to my last post- anyway-

i have 2x tt silver river usb extrn enclosers with- 2xseagate st3200822a 200g ide ultra 100 drives- and i have a amd 64 x2 3800+ i will install sometime later-

well i have only sata connections free on my p4 rig- i have an opt drive 1 each on my ide channels- so just the w/d 800 for now on my kn8 rig- when i do upgrades i will buy 2x matching sata drives to put ion my kn8-

im retarded menatly incompedent- i learn to use and build these systems on my own-and use macs to- i do my own case and cooling mods- and i had- installed the first ai7 xp120 combo in the world [posted with photos install instructions etc. abit forums]it was a simple straight down install- every1 said it could not be done-many said they tried and no go- cause of the turned chip placement-

so im still learning-and need or want to learn to over clock my systems-but that stuff is like chinese math to me-complicated- i try some- cant never get things to pass both memtest86 and then past prime95 from windows- so i reset my defaults and give up-

like i rebuilt and installed by my self my engine in my 87 toyota corolla 2 door coupe- but i cant rebuild a carb- to many small parts-and ive never seen or done it befor- so im more afraid than anything- any help from you folks would be welcome-

again thanks- im done typing now-ha ha

I just skim-read what you wrote but I'm not sure what you're actually asking. Can you sum up your question in a few words?

I *think* you're saying that you have a CRT monitor hooked up to a graphics card's DVI port using a VGA cable and one of those little DVI-to-VGA converters that comes with most cards. The monitor keeps blinking on and off.

If I have that right, you're probably trying to use a resolution or refresh rate that the monitor can't handle. Check the monitor's manual to find its capabilities and choose a resolution/refresh rate that fits.

Regards

Nelviticus
