print problem on laptop to epson LQ570

print problem on laptop to epson LQ570

I have written programs to support my hobbies.  They all speak directly to the dot matrix printer, EPSON LQ570.  I have recently purchased an HP laptop pc, which does not have a parallel port, only USB ports.  I bought a special cable with a parallel connector on one end and a USB connector on the other.  If I request printing of a document in WORD it prints out ok on the EPSON LQ570.  However my dbase programs cannot get the pc to recognize the EPSON LQ570 printer.  The programs run ok and I see the results on the screen, but I don't know how to get them to print on the EPSON LQ570.  It seems to me that a special driver would be needed to handle the unique needs of a cable with USB on one end and a parallel connector on the other.  I sure would appreciate any advice.  If I can't solve this problem I'll just go buy a desktop to use exclusively for printing the output from my dbase programs.
