Clipper on Windows 2003 Server with Advantage

Clipper on Windows 2003 Server with Advantage

(OP)
Has anyone had any experience running Clipper applications on a Windows 2003 Server with Advantage Database Server loaded.  We have been running these applications on a Novell server with Advantage but would like to migrate them to a Windows Server.  I am looking for information on what changes need to be made in the link script.  The EXE that I created to be used on Novell Netware will not run on the Windows Server.

Does your clipper application(s) access the Advantage database?

On our Novell server we use Advantage database server which manages the access to our clipper (dbaseIII databases)on the network, using Clipper applications.  There is a version of Advantage that we load on our Windows 2003 server that is suppose to do the same thing.  I was hoping to find someone that has run clipper applications in connection with Advantage on a Windows 2003 server.

RE: Clipper on Windows 2003 Server with Advantage

OK, my bad. I assumed Advantage was your database.

I run many of our legacy clipper apps on windows 2003 and haven't had any problems, however I obvliously, know nothing about advantage.

good luck.

RE: Clipper on Windows 2003 Server with Advantage

You probably have to switch Advantage from using IPX protocol (Novell specific), to the TCP/IP protocol, if the version of your Advantage Clipper libs have that option (has been there for a really long time I guess). If it's hard-coded in the app, then a recompile would be needed. Maybe it's just some config-file that needs a little adjustment?
You then power up the ADS server at your Windows server, and all should be well big smile (That's probably cutting a few corners...)

Good luck,
TonHu

There is something that has to be done during the linking process but I have had not luck in finding out what.  The version of Advantage that we got to put on the Windows 2003 server is several generations newer than the one we are using on Novell. I just need to find that programmer out there that has used Clipper with Advantage on Windows 2003 server.  Hopefully one will popup here eventually.

RE: Clipper on Windows 2003 Server with Advantage

You have to run ADSDOSIP.EXE before you run your Clipper application to translate the IPX packets to IP.  Your application will slow down because of another communications layer between you and the ADS host.
