showmount - RPC: Program not registered

showmount - RPC: Program not registered

(OP)
When I run the shutdown command on our solaris 8 server, it gets error:
showmount: HOST_NAME : RPC: Program not registered

This kicks back to a prompt.

I get the same error when running showmount command line.

/usr/sbin/rpcbind is running.

SUN support is still unable to help me.

Any suggestions.

Forgot to include:

ps -ef |grep nfs
  daemon   229     1  0   Apr 15 ?        0:00 /usr/lib/nfs/statd
    root   230     1  0   Apr 15 ?        0:00 /usr/lib/nfs/lockd

RE: showmount - RPC: Program not registered

Why isn't mountd running?

RE: showmount - RPC: Program not registered

Kozlow;

Is this a client and server for nfs?
If server does your dfstab entries look good?

Also check out doc 18425 on sunsolve may help troubleshoot RPC:Program not Registered issues.

Thanks

RE: showmount - RPC: Program not registered

Kozlow;

I am testing acouple things on this. I have set up a nfs mount from a solaris 9 box to a solaris 8 box and I am seeing the same issues as you.

My nfs mount works fine and I am able to get to my information.

When I issue the showmount on my client i get the same error as you.

showmount: e450: RPC: Program not registered

Also when I run shutdown command I get the following then it goes to single user, is this what happens to you;

shutdown

Shutdown started.    Thu Aug 21 20:50:42 EDT 2003

Broadcast Message from root (pts/2) on e450 Thu Aug 21 20:50:42...
The system e450 will be shut down in 1 minute

showmount: e450: RPC: Program not registered
Broadcast Message from root (pts/2) on e450 Thu Aug 21 20:51:12...
The system e450 will be shut down in 30 seconds

showmount: e450: RPC: Program not registered
Do you want to continue? (y or n):   y
Broadcast Message from root (pts/2) on e450 Thu Aug 21 20:52:00...
THE SYSTEM e450 IS BEING SHUT DOWN NOW ! ! !
Log off now or risk your files being damaged

showmount: e450: RPC: Program not registered
Changing to init state s - please wait

So I will work on this and see what I can figure out.

Also how are you mounting the nfs share?

Thanks

CA

RE: showmount - RPC: Program not registered

(OP)
No NFS involved here.

I was running:
shutdown -i 5

to halt / Power down the server before a scheduled power outage when I first discovered this.

It would kick me to a prompt.  I assumed that the shutdown failed at this point.  I then ran the showmount command line and received the same error.

Went and ran:
reboot

After it came up, reran the shutdown -i5...

Went to the prompt but eventually shutdown/powered down.

The showmount command continues to get the rcp error.

I should have done it from the console, but we had to shutdown all the servers in the computer room (mixture of AIX, HP-UX, SUN and Win).  I was doing it from my desk.

Let me know what you find out.

Thanks.

Funny that SUN support would not have picked up on this right away....
