Product Design Software

(OP)
I am searching for a 3D-graphics design tool.  We want to be able to design around to home objects using 3D software to model and help in the design process.  This is external not the internal mechanics.  No gears and wires only outside shaping surfaces and color etc.  Kitchen gadgets/tools, appliences and other home designer objects maybe picture frames even small furniture. I know that Alias Studio Tools is one of the best.  I am trying to prepare a brief comparison of competing products.  Can anyone help me with a list of software that might have some of the same fuctionality as the Alias Studio Tools product?

Thanks

RE: Product Design Software

you might want to try looking at form-z or rhino 3d.  they are both stand alone modelers (meaning they can't animate)  but they can do the modeling you're talking about at a lot less cost then maya or studio tools.  by the way maya is the character animation, special effects product of alias and studio tools is the more cad design end of there products.  as for 3d packages comparable to maya, there is softimage which does similars stuff at similar prices then down the line there is 3d studio max and lightwave.  those are the four big animation programs out there.  hope that helps

RE: Product Design Software

Alias/Wavefront now has a FREE, not-for-profit version of Maya (Maya Personal Learning Edition) that you can download from their website. If you are looking to learn maya, this is the answer.

It has all the features of the full version, however it does not allow you to export out of it and it puts a watermark on all your renders.
