First, double apologies that (a) I don't have much info at this time & (b) It's XP Home.

Basically

XP Home, SP1 - 3Gb processor, 512 MB RAM
Via vt6105 rhine III network adaptor

The story so far. A mate brought it round, running slow. To cut a long story short having installed AVG free, EWIDO, Spybot and Ad-Aware via CD-ROM I removed approx 85 bits of malware. Then I dared plug it into my network and used HiJackThis. That recommended another 5 or six fixes.

I then decided to update to SP2 which I had on my network. Now this PC connected OK and reported a 100Mbps connection. I tried to copy over SP2 (approx 200MB) and it said - 142 mins. Investigation revealed it was transferring at .1 % of network capability.

I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Via Technologies - no difference.

So, what's going on here? I am now all out of ideas. Bar a re-install of windows.

Any suggestions? Help!

Thanks for that guys - but nothing worked. I disabled the on board Via vt6105 rhine III network adaptor and popped in a spare netgear card I had lying around. Problem solved.

Updating the Via drivers made no change either. So I am 99.9% certain the problem was hardware.
