Hi,

I'm new to Firebird. It came with DBA Manufacturing software. I've been trying to install both, and I get an error message when I try to open DBA "Failed to locate host machine. Undefined service gds_db/tcp."

I was told by a DBA support person that I may have an older, uninstalled verion of Firebird on my PC, which needs to be removed first. I found such a beast and removed everything I could find including Registry entries, but the error persists.

The support person told me to delete the Borland BDE, but I'm reluctant to do that. I may need the BDE for other databases. Does anyone here have any other ideas?

I use InterBase and get a similar error when the IB client software is installed but (for whatever reason) the file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\services

does not contain the line

gds_db           3050/tcp                  # InterBase Server

Also I noticed on the last time this happened at a client site I had forgotten to end the line with a carriage return/line feed so it wasn't reading the line properly

Is this the case ?

Unclejimbob,

Thanks for the tip. The gds_db entry was not in my services file, so I added it.

DBA is still not connecting to the database, but I get a different error message now: "Unknown username or password. Unavailable database." I still don't know why.

Sure, either the path to the database is incorrect or the database itself has been shutdown and needs to be restarted or the username and password combination is invalid or the password you are entering is incorrect because it is case sensitive and you may have the caps lock on. smile
