Starting a small email server.

Hello All,

I'm posting to get some help/advice on how to set about a small email server for a small company that have joined. I have just taken the position as I.T. Admin. Currently we have 11 computers in total. Each person within the company has their own roaming profile so they are able to move about each machine. However with regards to their email, it is stored locally on the induvidual's machine, therefore it cannot move with their H Drive.

Any suggestion was to simply get a new computer and configure it up and for it to act as the email server. Basically can anyone give me advice to start from scratch and all the steps needed to get a small, functional, but yet effective system?

I'm not sure what sort of responses you'll get because while there is a desktop email forum I don't think there is a general email server forum. Most of what I see are forums for supporting some individual proprietary server product.

To get what you are after though you'll probably want either some truly proprietary server product or else a more generic product that supports IMAP4 client access. Avoid POP3-only servers, that's probably what you are living with today.

Your choice of server will probably drive your choice of clients.

Take a look at David Information Server Engine or DvISE by Tobit. It's not free, but it's very, very good. It's modular so you can buy new users and functionality as you grow. (E.G. VoiceMail, SMS, Faxing etc.)

Support all sorts of mail collection such as TURN, XTURN, ETURN, POP, IMAP etc. Also comes with it's own client which is very good.

(BTW - i'm not a salesman!

)

Failing that, Exchange will generally be too expensive - so I would look at possibly Open Source, GNU software or possibly freeware. There's some good cheaper products out there.
