Home page with images instead of text - Good or bad?

I've been asked to work on our site rankings.  Our home page (asp coding) is nothing but some fantastic scripting and images that link to other pages on our site.

I have tweaked the META tags and keywords to be told by our web developer that since they "aren't used by search engines" anymore, we don't need them.  I've added ALT tags that match our keywords to all the images as well.  The scripts have been honed and are in separate files that are referenced.

Is there anything else that I can do other than having our web guy put actual text on the page instead of graphics?

Some text based navigation would help, if possible add it as captions for the images with some related anchor text for the target pages. Your alt attributes should not be simply keyword lists, but use them as you would anchor text on text links.

If possible get some text "below the fold" on the home page, It's not that critical to have a highly optimised front page, as on a correctly optimised site any page can and should be a "home" page for the related query. What is a problem is the simgle "Enter" link style home page. Having some deep links in a footer for instance can make the all the difference.
