We have an Intuity Voice Mail system running release 5.1. I'm attempting to clean up some subscriber names. I did an export of all the extensions and subscriber names. I changed them and re-imported them back in. That worked fine, but there were a few that failed. When I try to manually change the names on those boxes, I get the message "Duplicate Touch Tone - Already in use." What does that mean and how can I fix the problem? I know that if I try to name the box the same as one that already exists, it says "Partial Subscriber name not unique." I assume this is something along those lines. When I search my export for the name I'm trying to give the box, I don't find it in use anywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
~Scott

The error message is associated with the "spell name" feature.

In order to make the name spell feature work, you can't have two subscribers who's "touch tone spelling" are the same. That is the digits you would press if you spelled their name on a touch tone pad, can be identical. Smith, Joe and Smith, Joey are not going to work as listings in the same system, even if they are two different people.

Whenever I ran into this problem, I would try to modify the names so they were more formal or complex. (Joe becomes Joseph)

If you get really stuck, just hide one of the names by reversing the first and last name entries. It makes the "spell name" feature worthless for one of the subscribers, but it will let you finish the entry.

Okay...I follow that logic. That raises another question for me though. I work at a college, and I have two voice mail boxes for every dorm room, and the main dorm room extension. A sample designation would be ST 101 [Main Room Auto Attendant] ST 101 (9393) [VM Box 1] and ST 101 (9394) [VM Box 2]. This is valid for all the other extensions. I only seem to be running into problems with about 40 of the 2000+ boxes. The only thing unique about the ones that it is failing on is that they all currently named NewHall xxxx (yyyy) where xxxx is the room number and yyyy is the extension. What I'm trying to do is change them to be named NH xxxx. These boxes are all Auto Attendants and their individual voice mail boxes are all named NH xxxx (yyyy), and those are all okay. I'm not sure if that confuses things or makes the problem more odd?

Thanks.

No, actually it makes perfect sense.

By shortening the name from 'newhall' to 'nh' you made the mailbox name more likely to conflict with an already entered name.

You might try a naming scheme that makes it a bit more complex. (Like going back to NewHall.) Or just add a digit on the front end. 1NH xxxx(yyyy) The digits one and zero are good for masking, since they have no letters assigned and would therefore never conflict with a listed name.

I'm afraid that's the only way the system will allow entries.

Duplicate Touch Tone - Already in use." can also refer to names that are totally different, it is just they use the same keys on the phone. For example, the number '2' key has the abc on it. So if u have two names that starts with any of those letters, then it will have the same 'touch tone'.

Thanks for the explination everyone! I came up with a new naming scheme for that dorm.
