RRAS (Routing and Remote Access) Setup

SECTION 2 (NETWORK SETUP]

Reminder:This is the setup for our network. If yours is the same, or very similiar, this setup should work.

Conventions: This assumes you know how to get into the MMC consoles for RRAS DHCP DNS etc. We will name an entry in the left hand pane and give you instructions eg: Right click on "Server" Click on "Properties " "General Tab" Check "Enable Updates every "10" minutes. If value is not mentioned...It means we have left it at the default value

OUR NETWORK

1.  Single Win2k Server acting as a Domain Controler hosting Ourdomain.com with Active Directory integrated. DNS, DHCP, WINS, servers hosted on same machine. Static IP address assigned and reserved in DHCP Scope.
Domain Controler Hostname "Server"
Local IP address 192.168.1.10

2.  Single Win2k Server (stand-alone) hosting RRAS Server NAT Server and local Mercury Mail Server. Static IP address assigned and reserved in DHCP scope.
Stand-Alone RRAS Server Name "Netgate"
Local IP address 192.168.1.15

3.  Workstations  A motley collection of Win98 and Win2k-Pro machines. IP address assigned by DHCP. DNS server pointed to by DHCP. WINS Server pointed to by DHCP.

4. WINS setup
   Win2k Default

5. DHCP setup
   Server Hostname "Server"
   Scope (192.168.1.0)
   AddressPool  (Start 192.168.1.10)  (End 192.168.1.100)
   Reservations  (192.168.1.10  Server) (192.168.1.15 Netgate)

   Scope Options You will need to manualy configure these options as follows:
In the Left Hand Pane, Right click on "Scope Options" Click on "Configure Options" Scroll down list and check the boxes 003 Router, 005 Name Servers 006 DNS Server, 015 DNS Domain Name, 044 WINS/NBNS Servers, 046 WINS/NBNS Node Type ....Click on "OK"
Double click on "Scope Options" In the new right hand pane you should see the new options you just added listed.
Right click on the first option "Router" and Select "Properties" Enter the IP address in the string box (Our NAT router is "Netgate" so we have 192.168.1.15 entered)
Do the same for each option listed. DNS Domain Name should be your network name (ours is Ourdomain.com) WINS/NBNS Node Type shoud be ox8

   [b}Server Options Do the same as above adding options 003,005,006 and configure as above.

6. DNS setup

    A note about DNS .....We are not DNS Gurus and have our server set up  as simply as possible. One thing you have to do is configure the server to enable "forwarders" in order to do this you must remove remove the "." (root)entry under forward lookup zones. This will ungray the "Enable Forwarders" tab in the "Server" properties box.  If you plan to have your network talk to the internet, you must forward your non-local name requests to a server that knows where to look. This is usually the dns server(s) for your isp or website. Also, if you have a website set up as www.yourdomain.com and the local domain is yourdomain.com you will need to add an entry under forward lookup zones for "www" pointing to the IP address of your website. That way the local network can find the remote webserver by hostname.  If you are having DNS or name resolution problems on your network, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT INSTALLING RRAS OR NAT, until you have resolved the DNS issues. As long as you have your DNS server intigrated with Active Directory, and have it mounted on your Domain Controler, Win2k should do most of the setup for you except as noted above.
